These terms help the author convey the message the Hawaiian's are trying to voice to the public.I believe that the audience will be more likely to support because you don't connect the protests with crime and discourse, but with defense of tradition and sacred lands. Using these words the author was better able to explain the Hawaiian peoples reason to fight the construction of the telescope.
